Tradition and Beauty

If your dream vacation involves challenging golf, beautiful weather, a castle or two and some fabulous food, then Scotland has to be high on your list.
We ventured home (for me) this month to visit golf courses, restaurants and to stop by a couple of my favorite distilleries. We rented a house near St Andrews, stayed for five days in Edinburgh and spent a fabulous night and day at the Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club.
The hotel is set in just over 1000 acres of absolutely stunning countryside bordered by lochs, woodland and a view across the Pentland Hills. If you walk the golf course over to the 13th hole, you’ll even see the magnificent Edinburgh skyline.
There’s an excellent award-winning restaurant, The Pentland, where we enjoyed a wonderful dinner of venison, prime Scottish beef, and some of the greatest smoked salmon I’ve ever tasted.
A baronial mansion, the Marriott Dalmahoy offers just about everything you could wish for in a Scottish stay.
Their breakfast is certainly one of the best you’ll taste, no matter where you travel throughout Scotland, and their wonderful haggis managed to convert my husband in just one bite. Following breakfast at the Pentland Restaurant, he went in search of such perfection daily. Finally I had to make haggis for him, as no one could really match the talents of the chefs at The Dalmahoy.
With two outstanding  golf courses, ( The East Course has played host to championships such as the Scottish Senior Open, and the West Course offers a truly challenging test through tight fairways and small greens),  superb leisure facilities(including a fabulous heated pool)  and  an award-winning restaurant, you don’t really need to go much further than the grounds to get an idea of Scottish country living. But remarkably, this tranquil setting is just 7 miles from the city of Edinburgh, where  still other delights await the anxious tourist.
I could not recommend the  Marriott Dalmahoy more highly. Check out their website  - and start planning the holiday of a lifetime in Scotland. www.marriott.co.uk/EDIGS. And please take the time to check out the Podcast of my interview with Dalmahoy's GM Alistair Kinchin.
Traditional Scottish Breakfast
This is a classic Scottish breakfast. Haggis, black pudding, sausages, eggs, bacon, fried mushrooms, tomatoes and potato pancakes. It's truly a meal that sets you up for the day , and at The Dalmahoy, we had one of the best breakfasts ever!
