When I get a craving for very specific kind of food, you’ll usually find me driving to one of Jason Chong’s Kiawe Grill locations.  The one-of-a-kind Korean BBQ restaurant offers some of the best choices for lunch when you’re in the mood for a great burger, Korean food or a tasty plate lunch. From burgers to bentos and Kalbi plates to the best grilled chicken sandwich in Honolulu this is a true food find.

Intense heat from live flames under a Korean grill sears a variety of meats and preserves their flavor. The addition of Kiawe wood adds intensity, more flavor and the results are perfect burgers – as well as some more unusual choices including ostrich and buffalo.

“The meats are healthy, they’re different and they grill really well,” says Jason of his eclectic offerings. Buffalo and ostrich are being hailed on the mainland for their health benefits and make a fabulous alternative to beef for those watching their cholesterol and fat intake.  “Once people try them they really like them,” says Jason.
While finding unusual meats has become something of a passion for Jason, there are many recognizable favorites on the menu too.

There are those who say that his Kobe beef burger is the best in Hawaii – and I’m one of them. While my favorite sandwich remains the Chicken Deluxe (grilled marinated chicken on a soft, floured bun with mayo, lettuce tomato and onion) there are many options that appeal – including the chicken plates, scallops and grilled salmon.

Local favorites include fried mando meat jun, chicken katsu, pork katsu bi bim bap and a bento that has to be one of the largest in the state. Consisting of chicken, beef, pork katsu, fish, mandoo, spam, and mac salad over a mountain of rice, it presents something of a challenge to anyone without a massive appetite. With two locations – the second opened earlier this year on N. King Street – Kiawe Grill offers more to everyone who enjoys a hearty lunch or dinner.
