When I first met Lane Muraoka, the owner of Big City Diner he was just opening on Waialae Avenue. The concept seemed perfect –  a diner style atmosphere serving a mix of American and local style favorites, mixed with some home made recipes. It was sure to succeed and I left after my first meal there thinking that I’d be back many times. Since that day more than 4 years ago, I have been back dozens of times for breakfast and countless times for lunch and I’ve still only tried half of the menu.
Burgers come in a variety of styles from the classic great old-fashioned burger ($6.95) to the almost irresistible BIG burger (shown on the cover) with cheddar cheese, caramelized onions bacon and avocado ($8.95)

For vegetarians there’s the Garden of Eden Burger ($6.95) and Grandma’s Famous Kim Chee Burger. The burger arrives smothered in BCD’s famous homemade Kim Chee.

Salads are good – and if I wasn’t always so tempted by the burgers and fries I would eat them more often. They are colorful and packed with fresh ingredients. The Fiesta Chili Taco salad is a plate bursting with color and flavor and features chili served on a bed of romaine topped with shredded jack and cheddar cheeses, tomato, sweet onions, roasted corn, green onion and black olives. Served with fresh salsa, lots of cilantro and a cool buttermilk dip it’s one salad you won’t be sharing.

There are local plates, home made favorites and some of the greatest breakfast items you’ll find anywhere in Honolulu. All served up with the Big City Diner casual flair.

For sports fans, you can catch Monday night football, satellite live sports and, at the new Kailua location, all UH games. locations too at Ward and Waikele.
